EV Charger Installation in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has specific permits, utility programs, and local market conditions that affect your installation. Here is everything you need to know.

Chicago Permit Requirements

The City of Chicago requires a pulled electrical permit and a final city inspection for every EV charger installation that adds a dedicated circuit. Chicago permits are processed through the Department of Buildings and most residential permits are approved within 5 to 10 business days. Skipping the permit in Chicago creates serious liability issues and can affect your homeowner insurance coverage. Our Chicago installers pull every permit and schedule every inspection automatically.

Chicago Electricity and Utility

Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) serves Chicago and powers 70 percent of Illinois. ComEd offers rebates of $1,000 to $2,500 for Level 2 charger installations and requires customers to enroll in Hourly Pricing or Delivery Time of Day pricing for 3 years to qualify. As of March 2026 the current rebate cycle paused new applications but new funding rounds are expected. The federal 30 percent tax credit of up to $1,000 applies independently of ComEd rebates and does not require ComEd enrollment. See our cost guide for full details.

Chicago EV Charger FAQ

The questions we hear most from Chicago homeowners every week.

ComEd offers rebates of $1,000 to $2,500 for Level 2 charger purchase and installation. Standard customers receive up to $1,000. Select customers in equity-eligible communities or with household income at or below 80 percent of Illinois median income receive up to $2,500. To qualify you must install a smart ENERGY STAR certified Level 2 charger, use an ICC-certified electrician, enroll in ComEd Hourly Pricing or Delivery Time of Day pricing for 3 years, and apply within 90 days of installation. As of April 2026 the current funding cycle has paused but ComEd has committed to opening new rounds. Contact ComEd directly for current availability.
Most home Level 2 EV charger installations in Chicago run between $1,000 and $2,500 before incentives. Combining the federal 30 percent tax credit and the ComEd rebate on a single qualifying installation can reduce out-of-pocket costs by up to $3,500. For select customers who qualify for the full $2,500 ComEd rebate plus the federal $1,000 credit, a typical $1,800 to $2,500 installation could potentially cost nothing out of pocket.
Chicago winters are among the harshest of any major US city. Cold temperatures below zero Fahrenheit reduce EV battery range significantly and increase charging time. A Level 2 home charger is especially valuable in Chicago because it charges 6 to 8 times faster than a standard outlet, recovering range lost to cold weather much more quickly overnight. Our Chicago installers use cold-weather rated equipment and outdoor-rated enclosures for any installation with outdoor exposure.
